Bitstream vs PCM. Discussion in 'Home Cinema & Hi-Fi' started by Steedie, 19 Jan 2017. My Blu-Ray player, PS4, Xbox One are all hooked up to it and I've always read that I should set each one to output PCM and not Bitstream, as PCM is better due to it being uncompressed.

Uncompressed PCM is vastly better than Dolby Digital which is around 448kbps-640kbps lossy compression. Technically Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD MA are identical since they are both lossless compression and once they are decoded you are essentially hearing a 1:1 version of the Uncompressed PCM of layback audio from the mastering session. If using optical cable to the wireless transmitter, in audio settings keep headphones on stereo uncompressed but in the left side settings use bitstream out, Dolby digital or DTS. Nah the wireless headset actually pairs directly to the Xbox. So no optical cable used.
Oct 16, 2012 · In my own case, my old 5.1 amplifier could NOT handle a normal bitstream output from the blu-ray player when a 7.1 channel movie was playing. The new 7.1 amplifier (with 5.1 speaker outputs) does handle the normal bitstream output via Optical cable, AND it also supports the blu-ray player’s “Bistream – Audiophile” output setting.

There is the other issue that there’s no reference to DTS:X either so it seems possible that MS would just add an option in the bitstream out settings for Dolby Atmos vs just allowing passthrough.
